Finding a Counselor or Therapist in New Orleans

New Orleans, NOLA, The Big Easy. The Crescent City.

Call it what you will, it is a city like none other. The food, the music, the culture; you will not find another place like this city. We dance in the streets for funerals, and put our children on 6 foot ladders for parades! However, living in such a special place doesn’t shelter you from life challenges that can lead to anxiety and depression. New Orleanians pride themselves on being resilient and able to get through very tough times. But, sometimes the stress is too much to have to handle alone. When this happens, you should reach out and talk to someone. Get help and support. Whether you’re looking for a counselor or therapist in the lower Garden District, across town in Mid-City, or out in Metairie, there are several different resources to help you a therapist that is a good fit.

So, how do you find a therapist or counselor in New Orleans to talk to? Here are several ways to look for a therapist that meets your needs:

  • Psychology Today: Psychology Today allows you to search for therapists, counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Not only can you search by a specific zip code, but you can search using a variety of additional criteria/ For example, you can search for a therapist that works with certain issues (example: anxiety, trauma, depression, maternal mental health). Or you can search for a therapist that work with a specific population such as children, women, LGBTQ. Lastly, you can even find a therapist that provides certain kinds of therapy like CBT, trauma-therapy, mindfulness.

You can also search using phrases like “anxiety therapy Metairie”, “trauma counselor New Orleans”, or “online therapy New Orleans” to help find a therapist that focuses on your specific needs.

  • Your Insurance Company: If you have insurance, you can check your insurance company’s website and find a list of providers that take your insurance. You can also contact your insurance company directly to have them provide you a list of therapists and counselors in the Greater New Orleans area that take your insurance plan.
